Yesterday we started work on a new garage for a client. It is a good sized detached double garage. For this type of project we elected to use what is called a ‘floating slab’ for the foundation. This incorporates a reinforced edge beam at the perimeter of the garage floor, with additional reinforcing placed in the floor itself. We place the concrete for the edge beam and the floor in one pour. In preparation for the foundation we cleared out the grass and organic material and brought in granular fill. The granular fill under the concrete floor provides a well drained, properly supported base for the foundation floor.
